I use a niceish road bike to commute to work with. I do not see a problem with it. The only problem I am having is with all the rain we are having everything is getting gummed up pretty quick. But a minor overhaul next spring and I should be good to go.

As for wear the miles should not be a problem. The abuse is what concerns me. Bikes can get banged around a lot at bike racks. My beater shows countless scars from bike racks and the like. But if you have a safe place to lock up this is not an issue.

I would also fix that tire. You will be glad you did when you wake up to a flat on the road bike.
