I'm a tent user, but I've always been interested in hammocks. However, I use a tent because there have been so many situations before where there were no trees around to hang the hammock. Or if there were trees, they were too small to support my weight.

If you are cycling through Mexico, you should know that there are large sections that are pure desert. You will have a hard time finding a place to hang your hammock if you are cycling through these areas. But as others have suggested, you could try and use your hammock as a bivy sack if needed, but that doesn't sound like much fun to me. But it is an option. It just depends on where you will be going and what you are willing to put up with.
