I think it really works. Check out the sample videos. IMHO, during a road race, that's the best tactical view of the situation.
Of course, if that's not the goal, it doesn't apply. Like, for example, if you want to capture some pansy human interest crap with like people's emotions and faces,

it wouldn't work so well. I certainly think you could get interesting video from just about any angle. It just depends what you want to see. I would feel like looking backward in a race, you'd never really know what was happening.
