"Yes" to the first two sentences and "no" to the last. For my last pair of wheels (Stan's), the rims were selected for my weight and the nature of the trails I ride. They push the envelope on strength vs weight at the rim. Some reviews I found on the web has some folks going too light on the rims and the wheels collapsing.

Being a pain wimp and a retired engineer, I use the product as designed no matter the folklore about previous successes and the the fact that the product comes in variations.

My philosphy is if you want to run 24 spokes you get a rim designed for 24, period.
