That's not true. In a conventional wheel. half the spokes don't have enough tension to support the rim under all circumstances. In a triplet laced wheel, you have fewer spokes but at least they are all adequately tensioned. The greater spans and bending moments between spokes doesn't seem to be an issue at all, at least with deep section rims.
