Thanks. What you write is true but it's much more than that. There isn't a silver bullet -- it's an enterprise culture. That why I noted earlier the book, The Toyota Way.
I only know this because a relative was an engineer with Ford, and he was very critical that four new models each had a new different starter design. This was years ago. He now works for Toyota.
Ford's only technology in smaller vehicles and efficient engines was platforms they used from Mazda, but as of last week, Ford sold off it's share in Mazda.
