Fixed gear bike has the cog screwed directly onto the hub so there is no freewheel mechanism, you can't coast- though technically speaking a fixed gear bike is also a Single Speed bike since it only has one gear.

However what is generally referred to as a Single Speed bike, or SS, is a bike with a freewheel screwed onto the hub which allows you to coast.
