Tiny bits of metal in my brake pads

Tiny bits of metal in my brake pads caused them to sound rough and gravelly. I took them off, and scraped the metal out and they worked/sounded better.

I've read that shimano pads eat rims. But according to Trek, my 1000c's brakes are "Alloy dual pivot with Sora levers."

I've also read that Kool stop makes really good pads. It seems that pads would be a cheap upgrade if it made my overall braking improve. What pads would work with my bike?

Anyone know?
