My kid plays soccer, and this is one ofthe hot bed recruiting areas in the country. Lot's of competition for rides after high school. Yep, my kid is signed up for random testing, because she asked to be so she could list it on the Clearinghouse site for coaches to see.
There is, sadly, way too much money to be spent on this stuff in my area. I somehow doubt the diligence of the programs in football around here. Maybe it's the 8 million dollar football stadium we have here. With 15K-20K plus crowds at every game it makes money hand over fist.
I'm sure it's cliche by now, but the one of my favorite books is
Friday Night Lights. I first read that while I was in high school, playing football at the time, and I could not believe the things I read. Stadiums, people camping for days to buy tickets. Insane. Especially when I was playing to about 200 people with one set of bleachers, and no lights for the field. We got oranges at half time, not IVs.
