I do not think running barefoot is stupid. According to the winner Alex Romero, he could feel hip and knee injuries faster. The pro that they beat, had problems and pain due to his shoe.
I think the point here is not whether people can run barefooted or not, but whether this guy should have. If you spend a lot of time barefooted, or routinely run barefooted, you'll have your feet all toughened and calloused up and be prepared for it (and may need to adjust running style slightly, too). If you don't normally run or spend a lot of time barefooted, then running long distances barefooted is just stupid and is going to tear your feet up- which sounds like exactly what happened. It'd be the same thing if those two brothers you mentioned were to put on a brand new pair of $10 Walmart sneakers and then went and ran a marathon and tore their feet up.
