Remember that bike manufacturers get huge discounts on components when they buy in bulk. A full set of components for a bare frame will cost as much as a brand new complete bike. The only reason to buy components piece by piece is when you want to specify each component by brand, model, and size. Complete bikes in the lower price levels usually include lots of house-brand parts instead of the name brand parts that look nicer (if not perform better).
