The Straight Edge scene varies greatly according to city. All the ones from the SE region seem pretty cool, some of the ones I've run into in Ohio and a couple other cities where basically a bunch of idiot thugs. I have no problem with not doing stuff that can potentially harm you, I have a little problem with anyone who's preachy, and I have a big problem with gangs of kids who beat the **** out of people coming out of a bar for kicks. The last is an exception to the rule, but has been known to happen, and be bragged about.
Do what makes you happy, but don't be a dick.
