I am not Straight Edge, but before we all jump on "the last train to Smugville," let's maybe think about how hard it might be for someone to give this all up, and to think maybe that's why they would want a peer support group. If you think of everything from prescription meds to marijuana to caffeine as a drug, which it is, and consider how ubiquitous use of these drugs is, and how, judging just from how threads about veganism or straight edge generally go on a public forum like this, which is to say a few people who are into it, and many more people who just chime in to antagonize them, I think it's obvious why folks might band together as a "scene."

What's funny to me is that Mormons feel about the same way about drugs including caffeine, and yet the same people who diss SE wouldn't think of hating on Mormons. Plus, Mormons believe a whole lot of dumb BS that is quite obviously not true, SE kids generally don't, plus they have better music and dress better than Mormons. Think about it.

Seriously, I am neither Vegan nor SE, but once every two months someone makes a "Who Is SE/Vegan" -thread, and 80% of the posts are dudes saying hilarious junk like "I luv animals cuz they taste good" and "I'm drunk right now so screw you!" It gets old. Getting flamed for only wanting to put healthy things in your body, and having a support network of like-minded folks, is totally ridiculous.
