I wear good winter boots (Sorel in my case), which work fine down to -15 C or so for my 10 km commute.

One danger with extreme cold is that you need more clothing to stay warm when stationary (in the event of a mechanical or crash or something) than you do while riding. Never a bad idea to have a couple of extra layers along if any part of your route is relatively isolated.
