I work about a 3rd of the year on nightshift. It is the hardest of the 3 shifts I work due to the fact that the body is just not designed to be awake through the night. The trip home is hardest on nights due to feeling so tired and this is not dependant on sleep either. Your body clock never switches over to a different sleep pattern successfully. Research suggests regular nights increases the possiblity of developing heart conditions and basically shortens your life to such an extent that WHO have recently recognised at as offically bad for you.
Employers need to recognise the impact both physically and psychologically of nightshift and actually provide time and conditions for workers to get shuteye.
I love the ride home though and climbing into bed with a couple of cats lying on the bed, (they must work nightshift too!), when everyone else has gone to work is great. The work is easier more of a security role really, and at least on my nigfhtshift I get to eat an evening meal with the wife before going in. So there are good and bad points.
