I run an old mountain bike with trekking bar and it is very comfortable. If you try then you won't need to replace any of your shift/brake controls. They cost less than $20 (from Nashbar) and would be a good place to start. If you don't like them and really love the bike then spend the cash for the STI etc etc as mentioned above.
