What I use is 'tri-flow'. Simply spray on as you are spinning the cranks, wipe the chain WELL with a rag. Repeat. I do this as often as once a day, or as infrequent as once a week. Depends on riding conditions. You can do all this without any tear down of the bike which is convenient. The stuff works great.
IMO, one should maintain their drive train daily, if you ride daily.
No, it's not like the hot parafin wax stuff. I just used it it's called Ice Wax or something. You're just supposed to apply it to the rollers I guess. I cleaned up my chain well, then added the ice wax, was gonna ride it after it set for 10 minutes but it started raining pretty hard.
The guys at my LBS told me they all preferred this stuff over tri-flow, but I'm not really sure I trust them, haha.
