In the late fall/early winter I back off on the intensity just enough that I can recover while eating a lot less. In that mode the pounds fly off while not taking a huge hit in power. This year I've lost about 15 lbs so far and looking to lose about 5 more.
Your intake should go up but not to the point that you gain weight....
