How much is the bike worth?

I work at a university police station and have seen every type of lock broken. I wouldn't leave my good bike outside. If you must, you can consider a few things.

One is what college you go to. If it's large, chances are that it will have a security office linked to cameras across campus. You may be able to register your bike with them and get an electronic tag put in it. This tag is not GPS, but if your bike is recovered by the police you'll get it back. Back to the cameras, look for them. Thieves know where they are. Put your bike where the cameras can see.

A second is the locks you bought. Locks are a deterrent; as I said before, if they want your bike they'll break your locks to get it. It depends on how much it's worth if the deterrent is enough.

If your bike is an expensive racing bike, don't ride it to class. Go buy an old road bike from a garage sale for $20. This is much less likely to be stolen - especially if it looks like crap. Keep your nice bike inside.

One more thing is to compare your bike to what other people have locked up. If yours is the nicest, forget about it. If tons of other people have nice bikes that are easier to steal, don't worry as much.
