As you say it's not all for the race. It's meant to raise funds for their charity, not just fund the logistics for the race.
If they really do sell out in 30 mins and it is all about the charity then they should go the sponsored route and charge even more. Say $4-500 minimum sponsorship.
When you read their "mission" it seems that 100% of the proceeds go:
"from which all proceeds support Tin Mountain's great work promoting an appreciation for the natural world while instilling the bedrock principles of sound stewardship and sustainable lifestyles."
Nice ideals, but OTOH, exclusionary in regards to fees. (I guess they figure when your client base is riding $$$ pricey carbon wheels and likely averaging $4500/bike, a $350 entrance feel is reasonable.)
I don't know enough about their "great work", but would like to see more of their financials out in the open.
