If anything I think the Merida is better specified. The Trek may have a slightly better rear derailer but the Merida has the better cranks (Shimano vs the FSA on the Trek). The Merida has a full Sora 9 speed group including hubs which are actually quite good.

The value for money is clearly with the Merida.
