Luminary Ride

Sunday was the 20th Annual North Florida Bicycle Club Luminary Ride.

A neighborhood in Jacksonville lines the streets one evening before christmas each year with luminaries, and it becomes an excuse for a massive street party.

The ride can best be described as Critical Mass meets Santa Claus. There had to be at least 1000 riders, mostly on the organized ride, but also a good number riding out of another location, then just bunches of people out on their own.

The group ran the gamut from hipsters on fixed gear, tall bikes, unicycles, recumbants, mountain bikes, racing bikes, recumbants, trail a bikes, tandems, to little kids on bikes with training wheels.

Many bikes were decked out with christmas lights, and garland.

We put battery powered LED christmas lights on our bikes, and duct taped reindeer antlers with flashing lights to our helmets.

It was pretty fun, with all the houses lit up and decorated, and sing carols as riding. However there was ton of traffic, with bikes, pedestrians, cars, and horse drawn wagons, which made the ride end up moving below 5mph for the most part, and frequently coming to prolonged stops.

The traffic kind of diminished the ride, but all in all a good time.
