It is not necessary to enjoy it. Some people enjoy the technical and scientific stuff as well as the riding and for them it makes it more fun. In my opinion the group rides and ad hoc training you did this year is the best way to start. But most of us can only get so far with that sort of training and need to get more disciplined and technical to keep progressing. Whatever is fun for you is the right way to do it.
