I replaced the whole wheel (wanted to build a new one anyway), never opened the old dying one up, though just before I replaced it the noise went away, I theorize that it ate a bearing, maybe I'll go open it up now.
If it's a cup and cone wheel, just repack the hub and put in new bearings. Doesn't take that long and the wheel will feel as good as new.
