This is my style of touring too ... simple relatively inexpensive choices.
I don't mind going several days without showers and laundry facilities, and I like eating grocery store food ... and those things bring the cost down. Then I turn around and spend the money on something like the cruise out to the Great Barrier Reef.

I'd rather have the experiences and memories ... to spend the money on seeing and doing things along the way ... rather than spending it on where I'm going to sleep, what I'm going to eat, and trying to maintain a clean wardrobe.
