Thanks for the advice Rowan. I thought more about this thread in the last couple of days. I realize that when growing in a permaculture system a person grows what is suitable to the area, and what will fill in the gaps in the little ecosystem. In that case, there is a substantial chance that there will be little demand for the type of fruits grown in the permaculture setup. That is a weakness of permaculture, in my opinion, when it comes to growing for a market. On the other hand, I think that square foot gardening would allow for growing the herbs and vegetables that are in demand.
I am aware of the three year period required to get organic certification. I'd just have to wait it out. In my opinion, the prices of conventionally grown produce at retail have risen enough to make selling naturally grown uncertified produce profitable, if you sell it at conventional prices, and if you have very little overhead.
I'm starting to feel like I hijacked this thread. I'm sorry for thread jacking if I did. My first reply to this thread was about my concern for living in a rural area while living carfree, and furthermore, trying to farm. I was on topic for a while, maybe.
Back to the original posters issues with carfree living in a rural area... any other ideas anyone?
