How lame is the off season?
OK, I have dropped from a respectable (albeit not impressive) 80-100 miles per week in the warmer months, down to maybe 1 ride, 20 miles per week. I know I can't sustain my previous fitness at this rate.
Last weekend I went for a ride on moderate hills on a beautiful day, and 13-14 miles was all I wanted to sustain! Here is what being out of shape felt like (tell me if this makes sense) -- it's like, my body/legs were simply not responsive to the feel of being on my bike. They didn't "want" to move last weekend, whereas several months ago I would get on the bike, and at least initially my legs would respond to the bike, and want to push, push (okay, "spin, spin") on the pedals. It just didn't feel natural last weekend.
Is this common? What will it take to return to my previous condition?
