The bottom line is that China is following in Japan's and Taiwan's wake.
One significant difference is that the population of N.A.+Europe is ~6X that of Japan and ~30X that of Taiwan, but only ~2/3rd that of China. Exporting will always have to be a relatively smaller portion of their output. Their industry will not "live and die" on export products and they will always have to consider their commitment to export products that have no home market.
