I don't draw the same conclusion. What he wrote was confusing in the final 2 sentences, but it doesn't sound to me like he was making a flat statement about "everyone".
It's interesting that the true believers have been so quiet about the hitchhiking he's doing. I imagine some doubt has set in concerning the entire endeavor.
