You won't find brakes that will reach far enough. You'd have to get cantilever/v-brake posts brazed on and it's probably not worth the expense when you can probably pick up a decent mid 1990s mountain bike for about the same price. If I wasn't severly cut back on my work hours I would be picking up just such a bike. There are several nice options currently available locally but I can't buy they.
