Why would Trek use Deore on a roadbike?

I was under the impression that Shimano Deore was part of their mountain bike lineup. I am looking at a 93 Trek 1420 road bike and it came with a Deore DX component group, the 1400 model came with shimano 105. Is it not as black and white as I thought, was it normal for a "mountain bike" group to be used on a road bike? What is the reason / incentive for Trek to do this, cost?

Finally, Deore DX appears to have been below XTR and XT in the 1993 lineup, what is it's reputation?

Thanks,
Matt
