Than some SRM systems. There are SRM amatuer systems out there for sale new for $100 less than the equivilent Quarq using the Garmin computer.
It's also not lighter when you factor in the heavier Garmin head unit and mount.
There is no compact 110 option for the Quarq.
No Dura Ace option.
Having looked at the sealing on the battery, we'll see how the weatherproofing holds up over time.
Crank unit being external it's more likely to be damaged in a crash.
No service track record.
No long term reliability record.
Non-proprietary computer/recording device. (Cranium might or might not happen, price is vaporware at this point). 3rd party firmware updating.
For me at least, the Garmin is too big and bulky for my use in races and TT's.
No wired option. (Call me old school, but even with ANT I've seen data drops and issues).
Software not included.
No stated warranty on crankset or electronics. No statement on warranty on owner provided crank.
As an early adopter of the Ergomo and a later SRM owner (two units), I would have concerns. I used the Ergomo for a year plus with no issues and good customer support, then that all went away. Going on season 3 with my SRM's (use the same computer on both) and finally had the batteries replaced. Less than two week turnaround.
With over 400+ hours of use on the SRM, in all kinds of weather and temps, races and crashes, I can say the entry price was worth it.
BUT:
I like the direction Quark is going and wish them success. If I was in the market I'd definitely weigh all the pros and cons and consider it. It would most likely come down to a strictly financial decision on the purchase, $50 a year for service and some planned downtime every two years (my experience) wouldn't put me off an SRM.
Mer-xLite if you get one keep us posted.
And use a good glob of silicone grease on the battery O-ring.
