I rode single speed when i was a little kid, I'd say 5 years old. That's the bike I learned on. Then i moved up to geared mountain bike, then geared road bike, then back to single speed (at age 20), now fixed (still at age 20).
I think it's fairly safe to say we all learned on a SS of some sort, and then the overwhelming majority of us then moved onto geared bikes (except for those crazy BMX folks). I think the quantum leap is the decision to "return to our roots"
