He has a hold of the brake hood, which would lead me to believe he is concerned about the bike staying upright. That is a possessive trait, and most would do the same. I'm going to guess the younger man is driving sag for the man holding on to the bike, and just wanted to be in the picture also. Also 3 bikes / 3 helmets / 3 in bike clothes / 2 loaded touring bikes / 1 bike unloaded / toe straps on bike & tennis shoes on taller gentlemen.

Of course this is just a guess on my part.
