If it's black ice you're concerned about, don't go out when it's below 40ºF, because that was the ambient air temperature the morning I crashed hard on some a couple of years back. The pavement was obviously still 0ºC. Black ice avoidance is more a question of steering around anything that looks too black or shiny on the road. Nobody has as much experience with black ice avoidance (and non-avoidance) on a road bike than I do. Trust me on this.
