I tried the lower brake set up as an experiment and liked it there... As I spend a lot of time in the drops (on this bike) this puts the brake at the end of my fingertips and because it is an old style Mafac lever (non aero) I always brake from the drops to get the best leverage and maximum pull.
I run all my front brake / brakes moto style (on the right).
Gear ratio is 77 gear inches... there's an 18 in the back.

The rear fender is removable and for the most part, this is a fair weather bike.

See my note on gearing... I like running big rings and larger cogs.
The crank is a modern Peugeot branded Sakae / SR with a 52 tooth Sugino chain ring.
I have managed to do 10 mile runs in times of 22 minutes with this old bike but I don't think I am up for attempting the hour record any time soon.
it's quick & fun...that's all that really matters!
so it's a fun bike & you have a good reason for the "strange" ways some things are set up?
hmmmm.....i think this is a good example of ....just because a bike doesn't look "dialed in" doesn't mean it isn't!
