When I am done wrapping I reinstall the lever. It's clean and it allows you to remove the levers without affecting the tape! I start doing this when I was working on my gazelle and waiting for my reproduction campy world logo hoods (worth every penny BTW even if I would actually prefer the rubber to be more rigid).
