...Ultimately, on my vintage restoration piece type rides I use cotton tape an then there is no need to peel the tape back because the prefferred method is to position the levers and then remove them when you get close with the tape and wrap around the clamp. When I am done wrapping I reinstall the lever. It's clean and it allows you to remove the levers without affecting the tape! I start doing this when I was working on my gazelle and waiting for my reproduction campy world logo hoods (worth every penny BTW even if I would actually prefer the rubber to be more rigid).
