I didn't get through Cryptonomicon. I got bored a third of the way through. Which seems to be the case with me and ol' Stephenson. Same with The Diamond Age though I did finish that - eh. I still like his first book, Snow Crash.
I'm curious at this epic trilogy that he's written though.
Finally someone who agrees with me-- btw Zodiac isn't bad either, then Neal went off into Critic pleasing, I'm smarter than you are mode. Snow Crash had swords, nuclear powered sidecards, hot young skateboard chicks. That was what rocked not how "smart" the writing was.
Zodiac is not some super smart story either, it's about this guy who people refer to as the granola powered james bond, sort of a mild, ecoterrorist.
I think Neal got a book deal based on word count, and bigger words pay more too.
