Upper middle class, anyway, but several of my classmates were rich kids. I was trading up from my first bike, an early 1950s Schwinn middleweight with a 2-speed Bendix coaster brake hub, which I had bought for $15 from a friend.

When my brother and I got our $55 Bianchis, the first thing the kid next door asked was, "Are they Varsities or Continentals?"
