I'll agree with the first response; very do-able commute. My current job had me doing that commute for about two months. At first the distance took some getting used to, mostly from a time perspective.
Getting on to the I-90 trail was a little harder for me to figure out then it seemed like it should have been. The best route, IMO, is to get on the 12th Ave South Bridge (what is now officially called the "Jose P. Rizal Bridge"). Once you get to the top of the bridge, right by the entrance to the Pac Med Center, you'll see a sign for the I-90 trail. The entrance to the trail is on the East side of 12th, so I would make a habit of riding up that side of the bridge. There is a lot of traffic on 12th, and crossing it can take some time.
I personally never tried 118th, but instead would take 108th once I got off of I-90. It is a little hilly, especially a rather steep drop into/back out of the crossing for Bellevue Way. But other than that it is really nice. Almost no traffic, almost residential.
Some other hints, based on my brief experience:
- If you're used to riding in downtown Seattle, then you might find a few more drivers in downtown Bellevue that aren't used to having bicyclers on the road with them. I never had any real incidents, just a few panicked looks every once and a while.
- Have clothing for the worst. If there is a chance of rain, be prepared for it. My total commute was 1.3 to 1.5 hours, and in that time it seemed like the weather could change four times. Going across the I-90 bridge with rain/wind is going to get you soaked fast if you're not prepared for it.
Have fun!
