my two cents: Once again, depends. If your team was really pulling for one and only one team leader, then when you realized he was not around, you drop back. Sorry, he is the guy and you need to be on the same page.

However, if it is not all of the eggs in one basket, and instead you are trying to help a guy but he is not THE ONLY guy, then you did the right move. You tried to help, he didn't follow, so tough. You go on to take second or you provide a carrot for OTHER teams to chase effectively saving your own team for the leadout.

You did the right thing unless it was expressly stated that there was only one person who would be worked for on the team.
