I put a seven speed Sturmey-Archer Hub with coaster brake on an old Columbia Twosome tandem and haven't had a problem yet. It's probably gone only 200 miles with me and a child peddling, so I'd describe it as having extremely light use so far. I do feel it has a certain hot-rod character though, and was worth the effort and minimal expense.
