How about loosening all the spokes, then lay the rim on a flat and level surface, place a flat board over the top and finally weights on it. See if you can't get the rim to flatten out before you try truing it? I would suspect that would be an easier, yet cumbersome, way to get the spoke tensions to be equal once you re-true it.
You have to bend it past straight and "stretch" the metal the other way so it naturally bends back "straight".
IF you have spare time, it's worth a try.
