In fixie land, clips and straps are all the rage. If you have Christophe clips and Alfredo Binda straps WITH the plastic tabs you are the bomb. The go so well with the Manpri pants and the checkerboard Vans that are the de riguer uniform for the hipster.

Matched sprint and flying 200 m track racers still use them also because there are no clipless pedals that can hold the power of their massive guads.

Many years ago I raced exclusively with clips and straps (I'm old, I know) and they are just as good if not better than clipless, but today, shoes for clips and straps are hard to find and for most applications (except the track) clipless work just great. I wouldn't go back.
