General rule of thumb is you can draw down 4% of your portfolio a year, and have a shot at not outliving your money.
That means if you had $675,000 in investments, your income in retirement would be $27,000. Throw in $10,000 or so from social security, and you're living on less than $40,000 a year.
I don't think many people would call $40,000 a year to be very rich.
portfolio portschmolio. when i get crusty I am gonna live off the land in a simple cabin, cut trees for heat and shoot rabbit for food. that is living. will have a snowmobile to get crazy on in winter and...you get the drift....simple. right now I am in a fortune 500 solving cryptography problems. who needs complication ?
