From personal experience, garage sales won't get you far unless you are lucky as Tom Brady and him getting Gizelle (sp?). I would keep an eye on Craig's list... unless you live in a one horse town you will be able to find some good deals. If you have some money, check eBay, it is more expensive... but they have more selection. The main problem I ran in to at garage sales is you show interest in an older bike that they are selling for $25 then they say "Oh! Sorry that price was from last year, it is actually $100." <---- Actual experience.
