Maybe it was just me. I put in about 1000 miles (riding only in the drops) before I gave up and sold the Record-equipped bike.
I have very long fingers and still felt like I was reaching (up) for the thumb lever. The angle of my finger seemed to cause a lot of friction and shifting just one gear required too much focus.
This has a lot to do with hood position. I used to be able to get at the shifters just fine with deda 215 bars but now with some deep, round belgian drops it's a bit of a stretch
