Maybe your mtn bike works better with triple because it has 113mm BB vs. 118mm bb (I'm using ISIS Specs). And yeah a bike with shorter chainstays is going to need a wider BB.
It has 111 mm spindle and you have it backwards. A wider spindle on a short chain stay bike will make the chain line worse, not better.
