Just did this ride yesterday - there are some pretty cool stretches in there. The climbing, according to my Garmin GPS was 6450 ft. The freeway stretches are easy and quick too. For those who want to visualize it, you can download the Google Earth kmz file of the route:

Cool. I didn't particularly like the flat stretch in Mira Mesa but the climbs are better than the 56 bike lane. My altimeter was somewhere along 6k as well but during my ride it started really cold and ended up really hot so I couldn't trust it. I thought about adding some more little climbs but I think it's not a bad 80 miles or so considering the area.
