Who says I can't wax my steel cogs? I've been doing it for years. Use the same precedure as with paint waxing(buff it shiny) and it works well.
I should note that my cassette is un-pinned, so I can change individual cogs out at will, which makes that job a ton easier.

Then I finish it out with lubing the chain with the above pictured lubes.
